A History of Events

The PPE Society’s inaugural event was held at the Eastern Division Meetings of the American Philosophical Association,  in Washington D.C., January 6-9, 2016.  Professor Cristina Bicchieri, the S. J. Patterson Harvie Professor of Social Thought and Comparative Ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, gave a talk on “Norms in the Wild” and Professor Jerry Gaus, the James E. Rogers Professor of Philosophy at the University of Arizona, commented.  The session was on the evening of January 8, 2016, from 7-10 pm.

The PPE Society also hosted a session at the Southern Economic Association Annual Meeting in Washington DC (Nov. 19-21, 2016), organized by Erik Angner, with papers by Christopher W. Morris, University of Maryland; Marcus Arvan, University of Tampa; Hun Chung, University of Arizona; and Jonathan Anomaly, UNC–Chapel Hill and Duke University. The session was chaired by Neera Badhwar, George Mason University.

Then the PPE Society organized two sessions for the 2017 American Philosophical Association Meetings held at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel, January 4-7, 2017: a PPE Research Session with a paper by Jason Brennan (Georgetown University) on “The Demographic Objection to Epistocracy” with comments by Derek Boyd (George Mason University) and a PPE Teaching Session with presentations by Jonathan Anomaly (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University), Peter Jaworski(Georgetown University), and David Lefkowitz (University of Richmond).

Since Then…

The PPE Society recently hosted a session at the Public Choice Society Annual Meeting in New Orleans (March 2-4, 2017), which was organized by Cathleen Johnson.  Details are posted HERE.

The PPE Society held its first stand-alone conference in New Orleans on March 16-18, 2017.

We then organized a session at the Eastern Division Meetings of the American Philosophical Association,  in Savannah, January 3-6, 2018. Professor Carmen Pavel, of King’s College, London will give a talk on “The Compatibility of Constitutional Democracy with International Law” and Professor Thomas Christiano, of the University of Arizona, will give a talk on “A Democratic Conception of Fair Exchange in Markets.” The session will be from 11:15 to 1:15 on Friday January 5, 2018.

The PPE Society held its SECOND stand-alone conference in New Orleans, March 15-17, 2018. Information is available HERE.

The PPE Society sponsored two sessions at the Eastern Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association in New York City, January 7-10, 2019:

  • “Establishing and Running a PPE Program” with Elizabeth Anderson (University of Michigan), Geoffrey Sayre-McCord (University of North Carolina) and Kevin Vallier (Bowling Green State University). Tuesday, January 8, Noon to 2 pm, in G6B.
  • “New Work in Philosophy, Politics and Economics” with Colleen Murphy (University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana) and Elizabeth Cohen (Syracuse University).  Wednesday, January 9, 2019, 11:15 am to 1:15 pm, in G11A.
